I have gotten so used to the normal button release on the Abu 6500 reels that I don't mine using both hands with it. The 6600C4 has a faster retrieval rate at about 30" per revolution compared to 25" per revolution for the 6500C3. But it is still just a matter of preference. And the thumb bar requires additional parts which can also cause additional maintenance issues. To me, and just a personal opinion, when using heavier weights for river fishing, I like to be able to put all of my thumb on the spool when needed. Some like the thumb bar in the middle of the spool but it can cause some problems. I don't think there is really any functional difference between the aluminum and plastic spool but if I have a choice I would go with the aluminum. It cost me $64 and about $8 for shipping. I am not associated with eBay or any one on it but have purchased numerous 6500 reels there. Let me know if you have any interest in this. But you will never bid more than you are willing to spend on the item you want. There are ways to bid and times to bid that can make the difference between winning and losing. If you are not familiar with buying on eBay, I can provide some advice there along with what to look for in a seller. Most parts that would ever need replacing are inexpensive and not hard to fine. I have caught 60# cats on them and then bluegill also. But they are all basically the same design. Some have an aluminum spool and others have a plastic spool. The 6500 reels started with two casting brake blocks and over time were upgraded to 6 brake blocks. I personally don't care for boat rash but it does not effect the functioning of the reel. All appear to be complete, some looking new and some with boat rash (some dings from laying in the bottom of a boat.). Of course these are in a bidding process so those prices can change. Right now there are 11 6500C3 reels on eBay for less than $71 and as low as $34. This is a good place for just what we are doing, discussing reels. I also didn't say welcome to the USCA forum.

Note, looking at Ambassador 5000 reels on eBay is a good way to see what the original reel had. If you want to use a really old reel that you can not get original parts for, that one is as good as any and that is totally up to you. It depends on whether you want a reel to fish with or a reel to look at. You can find numerous Abu Garcia reels that were made in Sweden like their 6500C3 reel and be much better off. If it were me, and I wanted a reel to fish with, I would sell that reel on eBay for parts or a vintage reel just missing a handle and then use my profits to buy a decent bait casting reel that wasn't so out of date. I am sure you could find some newer model parts that would fit it but you still end up with an old reel and don't really know its condition yet. That means finding the correct parts will be hard to do. If you look on eBay, the Ambassador 5000 reels are selling for between $100 and $2500 dollars, most toward the higher end. The main problem you have is that you have a collectors item.
